Hello! My name is Kavya and I’m 12 years old. Today, I want to talk about something that’s been on my mind…lying. You know, when someone doesn’t tell the truth. Everyone says it’s bad to lie, but I’ve been wondering if sometimes it’s okay.

So, I started thinking about all the times I’ve heard people lie and why they did it. Here are some of the things I’ve noticed.

Situations Where it is OK to Lie:

It’s hard to keep a secret or a surprise but it is sometimes required | Image source: jstrust.in
  1. To Keep a Surprise: Like the time my uncle told my aunt they were just going for a little drive, but it was actually to lead her to a big surprise party! She was so happy, and nobody was hurt by that lie.
  2. To Not Hurt Feelings: Once, my friend got a haircut that she was really excited about, but it looked…well, not great. When she asked what I thought, I told her it looked nice because I didn’t want to hurt her feelings.
  3. When Someone’s Sick: There’s this older man in our neighborhood who often forgets things because of his illness. When he forgets that his wife has passed away and asks about her, his son tells him she’s just gone to the market. It seems to make him feel better.
  4. To Make Someone Feel Better: When my little brother fell and scraped his knee, my mom told him that superheroes are brave when they get hurt, and suddenly, he wasn’t crying anymore. He started smiling and felt brave!
  5. To Avoid Trouble: One time, I accidentally broke a vase at home while playing. When my mom asked who did it, I said I didn’t know because I was scared of getting into trouble. Later, I felt really bad about lying.
  6. To Protect a Friend: My friend Riya once told me a secret about how she was scared of failing a test. When another friend asked me if Riya was okay because she seemed upset, I said she was fine to protect her secret.
  7. To Stay Out of Fights: Sometimes, when my friends are arguing and ask me who I agree with, I say I don’t know or that I agree with both to avoid getting into the fight myself.
  8. To Help Out: There was a time when we were playing hide and seek, and I saw where my friend was hiding. When the seeker asked if I saw where she went, I said no to help my friend win the game.

Now, I know lying is usually wrong because it can make people lose trust in each other. Like, if you always lie about doing your homework, your teacher won’t trust you anymore. And trust is really important!

But from what I’ve seen, sometimes people lie because they think it’s the best way to handle a tough situation. Maybe they want to protect someone or make them feel better. But this is not always true and lying can be an excuse that your mind uses against you. So I’ve created another list.

Situations Where You Should Never Lie:

  1. To Your Parents About Safety: If you’re in trouble or hurt, you should always tell your parents the truth so they can help you. Lying about being safe when you’re not can make things worse.
  2. To Teachers About Homework: If you didn’t do your homework, it’s better to tell your teacher the truth. Lying might get you into even more trouble if you get caught.
  3. When Someone Could Get Hurt: If your lie might cause someone to get hurt or be in danger, it’s really important to tell the truth. For example, if you see someone doing something dangerous, you should tell an adult.
  4. About Bullying: If you see someone being bullied or if you’re being bullied, it’s important to tell the truth to a teacher or another adult who can help.
  5. When Asked About Health: If a doctor or your parents ask how you’re feeling, you should always tell the truth. It helps them take care of you properly.
  6. In Friendships: Being honest with your friends is important. If you lie to your friends, they might stop trusting you, and that can hurt your friendship.
  7. When It’s About Money: If you find money or if you owe someone money, it’s important to be honest about it. Lying about money can lead to big problems.
  8. On Tests and Schoolwork: Cheating on tests or lying about your schoolwork is never okay. It’s important to do your own work and be honest about your abilities.
  9. To Police or Authorities: If you’re ever in a situation where the police or other authorities ask you questions, it’s important to tell the truth. They are there to help and need accurate information.
  10. About Serious Mistakes: If you make a big mistake, like breaking something valuable or causing a problem, it’s best to tell the truth. Owning up to your mistakes shows you’re responsible and trustworthy.
  11. When Promising Something: If you make a promise, you should keep it. Lying about keeping promises can make people stop trusting you.

Being honest can be hard sometimes, but it’s important because it helps people trust you and makes you feel good about yourself. Trust is something that’s hard to get back once it’s lost. So, even if it’s tough, try to always tell the truth in these important situations. This makes my life less complicated.

My Conclusion

I think it’s like this: most of the time, we should tell the truth, especially when someone is counting on us to be honest. But maybe, just maybe, there are a few times when it’s okay to not tell the whole truth, like when you’re trying to protect someone’s feelings or keep a fun surprise.

What do you think? Is it ever okay to lie? I’m still trying to figure it out myself, but talking about it like this really helps! Can you comment below and add to my list?
