Your calculator has one kind of logarithm, but the question uses another. Or a long product seems to change its base at every step. A single formula turns both situations into something you can read and simplify.

By the end, you can…
  • Derive and use the change-of-base formula with valid inputs.
  • Distinguish a reciprocal logarithm from the reciprocal of a sum.
  • Simplify complete logarithm chains without illegal cancellation.
  • Use positive-base symmetry and cyclic sums in JEE extensions.

One logarithm, written on a different scale

Suppose you want log⁡512\log_5 12, but your calculator offers only log⁡10\log_{10} and ln⁡\ln. You can use either. Changing base rewrites the same number as a ratio:

log⁡ba=log⁡calog⁡cb.\log_b a=\frac{\log_c a}{\log_c b}.

The original argument must satisfy a>0a>0; the original base needs b>0b>0 and b≠1b\ne1. The new base must also satisfy c>0c>0, c≠1c\ne1. Because b≠1b\ne1, the denominator log⁡cb\log_c b is not zero.

Here is why the formula works. Let y=log⁡bay=\log_b a, so by=ab^y=a. Taking a base-cc logarithm gives ylog⁡cb=log⁡cay\log_c b=\log_c a. Dividing by the nonzero log⁡cb\log_c b produces the formula. The numerator belongs to the argument; the denominator belongs to the original base.

The new base is a choice, not an extra unknown. Choose a convenient one: base 2 for powers of 2, base 3 for powers of 3, or a calculator’s available logarithm for a decimal estimate. If both numerator and denominator are changed consistently, the ratio stays the same.

In the activity, keep the original argument and base fixed while changing the calculation base. Predict whether the result will change before revealing it. A rounded calculator display is an approximation; an exact answer such as 23\tfrac23 should remain a fraction when the powers make that possible.

Work it through

Find log⁡84\log_8 4 exactly. Since 8 and 4 are powers of 2, choose base 2:

log⁡84=log⁡24log⁡28=23.\log_8 4=\frac{\log_2 4}{\log_2 8}=\frac23.

Check using the definition: 82/3=(83)2=22=48^{2/3}=(\sqrt[3]{8})^2=2^2=4. The fraction is the exponent we needed.

Swap the base and argument carefully

Changing base reveals a useful pair. For a,b>0a,b>0, with neither equal to 1,

log⁡ab=ln⁡bln⁡a,log⁡ba=ln⁡aln⁡b.\log_a b=\frac{\ln b}{\ln a},\qquad\log_b a=\frac{\ln a}{\ln b}.

The two values are reciprocals, so

log⁡ab=1log⁡ba,(log⁡ab)(log⁡ba)=1.\log_a b=\frac1{\log_b a},\qquad(\log_a b)(\log_b a)=1.

Here ln⁡\ln means the logarithm to base ee; its exact numerical value is not needed for the cancellation. Both ln⁡a\ln a and ln⁡b\ln b must be nonzero. This explains why the reciprocal rule needs both numbers to differ from 1.

The restriction is easy to overlook. log⁡21=0\log_2 1=0 is perfectly valid. But you cannot rewrite it as 1/log⁡121/\log_1 2, because the proposed logarithm has the invalid base 1. A useful identity does not make an undefined expression legal.

Likewise, compare the parentheses in (log⁡ab)−1(\log_a b)^{-1} and log⁡a(b−1)\log_a(b^{-1}). The first is the reciprocal of a logarithm; the second is the logarithm of a reciprocal. The power law makes the second equal to −log⁡ab-\log_a b, which is generally different from 1/log⁡ab1/\log_a b.

When a denominator contains one logarithm, swapping its base and argument can make the next step simpler. If the denominator contains a sum, pause. You must deal with the whole denominator before applying the reciprocal rule; it does not distribute over addition.

Work it through

Simplify (log⁡38)(log⁡83)(\log_3 8)(\log_8 3). Both 3 and 8 are valid bases and neither logarithm is zero. Using a common base,

ln⁡8ln⁡3⋅ln⁡3ln⁡8=1.\frac{\ln8}{\ln3}\cdot\frac{\ln3}{\ln8}=1.

In contrast, log⁡2(8−1)=−3\log_2(8^{-1})=-3, whereas (log⁡28)−1=13(\log_2 8)^{-1}=\tfrac13. The different brackets describe different operations.

Read the answer and explanation

log⁡74\log_7 4

Both 4 and 7 are positive and not 1, so 1/log⁡47=log⁡741/\log_4 7=\log_7 4. A minus sign would describe a different operation.
2. Why can log⁡21\log_2 1 not be replaced by 1/log⁡121/\log_1 2?
A hint, pleaseDistinguish the role of 1 as an argument from its role as a base.
Read the answer and explanation

Because the rewritten denominator uses the invalid base 1.

log⁡21=0\log_2 1=0 exists. The expression log⁡12\log_1 2 does not, since a logarithm base cannot equal 1. The reciprocal identity needs both quantities to differ from 1.

Find the beginning and end of a chain

A product can look complicated because each logarithm has a different base. Before evaluating anything, look for a link: does the argument of one logarithm become the base of the next?

log⁡ba⋅log⁡ac=ln⁡aln⁡b⋅ln⁡cln⁡a=log⁡bc.\log_b a\cdot\log_a c=\frac{\ln a}{\ln b}\cdot\frac{\ln c}{\ln a}=\log_b c.

The middle quantity disappears because the same nonzero factor ln⁡a\ln a occurs in the numerator and denominator. This is ordinary multiplication of fractions after change of base, not crossing out matching printed numbers. The conditions are a,b>0a,b>0, a,b≠1a,b\ne1, and c>0c>0.

A longer complete chain works in the same way. In log⁡23⋅log⁡34⋅log⁡45\log_2 3\cdot\log_3 4\cdot\log_4 5, every middle link matches. The surviving original base is 2, and the surviving final argument is 5. The result is log⁡25\log_2 5, which need not be an integer.

Be careful with the dots in a long expression. They must stand for the entire specified chain. A missing link leaves an uncancelled factor. Also, a sum of changing-base logs is not this product and cannot be simplified by the same cancellation.

Use the activity to change the last integer. Try a final value that is a power of 2, then one that is not. The structure still simplifies even when the exact answer remains a logarithm. Write the first base and final argument before doing the algebra; they are useful checks on your result.

Work it through

Evaluate the complete chain log⁡23⋅log⁡34⋯log⁡3132\log_2 3\cdot\log_3 4\cdots\log_{31}32.

ln⁡3ln⁡2⋅ln⁡4ln⁡3⋯ln⁡32ln⁡31=ln⁡32ln⁡2=5.\frac{\ln3}{\ln2}\cdot\frac{\ln4}{\ln3}\cdots\frac{\ln32}{\ln31}=\frac{\ln32}{\ln2}=5.

There are 30 factors, corresponding to bases 2 through 31. Each intermediate logarithm appears once above and once below. The first denominator and final numerator remain.

TOPIC 04JEE extension

See the symmetry inside two awkward powers

JEE extension. You do not always need a decimal approximation to compare large-looking powers. The identity

alog⁡bc=clog⁡baa^{\log_b c}=c^{\log_b a}

reveals a symmetry between aa and cc. Its conditions are a,c>0a,c>0, with b>0b>0 and b≠1b\ne1. Notice that aa or cc may equal 1 here: neither is required to be a logarithm base in the displayed formula.

To see the reason, write a=eln⁡aa=e^{\ln a} and use change of base. The left side becomes

exp⁡ ⁣(ln⁡a ln⁡cln⁡b).\exp\!\left(\frac{\ln a\,\ln c}{\ln b}\right).

Interchanging aa and cc does not change the product ln⁡a ln⁡c\ln a\,\ln c, so the right side has exactly the same value. The positivity conditions make each real power and logarithm in this argument legal.

This is especially helpful when the two expressions are being subtracted, divided or compared. Look for the symmetry before reaching for a calculator. It can turn two difficult calculations into a single structural observation.

The identity also works alongside the inverse rule. For 4log⁡234^{\log_2 3}, write 4=224=2^2, then 4log⁡23=(2log⁡23)2=94^{\log_2 3}=(2^{\log_2 3})^2=9. Alternatively, interchange to get 3log⁡24=323^{\log_2 4}=3^2. Two different legal routes give the same exact result.

Keep the exponent brackets visible. alog⁡bca^{\log_b c} is one positive power; it is not a product of aa, a logarithm and cc.

Work it through

Evaluate 3ln⁡7−7ln⁡33^{\ln7}-7^{\ln3}. Both terms are positive and

3ln⁡7=e(ln⁡3)(ln⁡7),7ln⁡3=e(ln⁡7)(ln⁡3).3^{\ln7}=e^{(\ln3)(\ln7)},\qquad7^{\ln3}=e^{(\ln7)(\ln3)}.

The exponents are equal because multiplication is commutative. Therefore the difference is exactly 0\boxed0, without approximating either term.

TOPIC 05JEE extension

Treat the whole denominator as one object

JEE extension. A cyclic expression repeats the same pattern while the letters rotate. Consider a denominator such as 1+log⁡ab+log⁡ac1+\log_a b+\log_a c. The extra 1 is useful: since 1=log⁡aa1=\log_a a, the whole denominator becomes log⁡a(abc)\log_a(abc).

Only now should you take its reciprocal:

11+log⁡ab+log⁡ac=1log⁡a(abc)=log⁡abca.\frac1{1+\log_a b+\log_a c}=\frac1{\log_a(abc)}=\log_{abc}a.

You have changed three different bases into a single common base, abcabc. Rotating the letters produces log⁡abcb\log_{abc}b and log⁡abcc\log_{abc}c. Their sum is therefore log⁡abc(abc)=1\log_{abc}(abc)=1.

The domain matters twice. The original bases a,b,ca,b,c must be positive and different from 1. Also require abc≠1abc\ne1: if the product were 1, every original denominator would become log⁡a1=0\log_a1=0, making division impossible. This same condition makes the new common base abcabc legal.

Do not split a reciprocal across addition. In general, 1/(u+v)≠1/u+1/v1/(u+v)\ne1/u+1/v. For instance, 1/(2+3)=1/51/(2+3)=1/5, whereas 1/2+1/3=5/61/2+1/3=5/6. The correct simplification works by combining the denominator first, not by reciprocating each piece.

The technique is a useful pattern-recognition exercise: make each denominator one logarithm, swap base and argument, then combine the resulting same-base sum. If a condition is missing, establish it before using the pattern.

Work it through

Let a,b,c>0a,b,c>0, each different from 1, and abc≠1abc\ne1. Simplify

S=11+log⁡ab+log⁡ac+11+log⁡bc+log⁡ba+11+log⁡ca+log⁡cb.S=\frac1{1+\log_a b+\log_a c}+\frac1{1+\log_b c+\log_b a}+\frac1{1+\log_c a+\log_c b}.

Set P=abcP=abc. The three denominators are log⁡aP,log⁡bP,log⁡cP\log_a P,\log_b P,\log_c P, all nonzero. Thus

S=log⁡Pa+log⁡Pb+log⁡Pc=log⁡P(abc)=1.S=\log_P a+\log_P b+\log_P c=\log_P(abc)=1.

Pause. Think. Try.

Write the reasoning

Show the domain, the key steps and a check of your answer.

Turn denominator logs into a solvable equation

Solve 1log⁡x3+1log⁡43=5\dfrac1{\log_x3}+\dfrac1{\log_4 3}=5.
Compare your solution

The variable base requires x>0x>0, x≠1x\ne1. The first log cannot be zero because its argument 3 is not 1. Reciprocity gives

log⁡3x+log⁡34=5⇒log⁡3(4x)=5.\log_3 x+\log_3 4=5\Rightarrow\log_3(4x)=5.

Therefore 4x=35=2434x=3^5=243, so x=243/4\boxed{x=243/4}. This is positive and not 1. The transformed logs sum to log⁡3243=5\log_3 243=5, and each reciprocal identity is valid at the solution.

JEE practice: remove an unwanted parameter

Given a+log⁡43a+log⁡23=a+log⁡83a+log⁡43=b\dfrac{a+\log_4 3}{a+\log_2 3}=\dfrac{a+\log_8 3}{a+\log_4 3}=b, with nonzero denominators, find bb.
Compare your solution

Let t=log⁡23>0t=\log_2 3>0. The ratios become (a+t/2)/(a+t)(a+t/2)/(a+t) and (a+t/3)/(a+t/2)(a+t/3)/(a+t/2). If two ratios equal bb, their numerator difference equals bb times their denominator difference. Here that denominator difference is t/2≠0t/2\ne0, so

b=(a+t/2)−(a+t/3)(a+t)−(a+t/2)=t/6t/2=13.b=\frac{(a+t/2)-(a+t/3)}{(a+t)-(a+t/2)}=\frac{t/6}{t/2}=\boxed{\frac13}.

Check consistency: the first ratio with b=1/3b=1/3 gives a=−t/4a=-t/4. The original denominators are then 3t/43t/4 and t/4t/4, both nonzero, and both ratios are 1/3. Subtracting corresponding numerators and denominators is justified by their equal ratios; it is not a general rule for unrelated fractions.
